I got it. You were tricked by who ever gave you this file. This is no error message created by VLC (this would appear in a separate window along with the usual red stop sign you known from OS X), but text embedded in the video graphics. Oh, really? Strange. Let's put "feepk" in front of the at sign followed by videolan.org. This should definitely work. A 3.3 MB attachment is perfectly fine (AFAIR, my provider has a 20 MB limitation). If this fails again, use sendspace or something similar and just mail me the link. Thank...

Even I faced the same error today with an avi file. I have 1.0.1 Goldeneye Vlc player. It is a avi out of camera. Its a movie which displays the said error and stops. Quicktime does not recognize as a movie file.
