Re: Sizes of data block input into VLC? (HD testing)

I contacted Don Capps, the developer of iozone, about what seemed to be the strange result that I saw with the random read rates exceeding the sequential read rates for large record sizes, and he gave me a very clear and logical explanation of what was going on: If the random read location happen to...

Re: Looking for an External HDD with VLC software

I believe there are third-party firmwares out there that release the full potential of Linux on media players like the Popcorn Hour and WDTV... though I am not certain whether their processors have enough horsepower to run VLC smoothly enough or not!

Re: Replacement for Adobe Flash plugin (Linux)

VLC has LUA scripts that can figure out the video URL from certain web sites. And most sites don't want to give video to outside of their page, because they lose ad revenues (otherwise they could give direct links to videos). And Google isn't prolly going to do any Flash API compatible software. Th...

Re: Sizes of data block input into VLC? (HD testing)

OK, I found the VLC developer's site, scanned the documentation & wiki, and downloaded the source code. The documentation & wiki are pretty good and describe the code modules and data structures, but the code is rather complex and I'm afraid I am in over my head trying to code dive for my an...

Re: Replacement for Adobe Flash plugin (Linux)

If you mean that the vlc code specifically supports YouTube URLs only (and not those of all other sites), I think you may be right. I tried using CNN and Hulu URLs, and neither worked. Entering the URL of video file itself, of course, works... It seems that creating an extension for Firefox to invok...

Re: Replacement for Adobe Flash plugin (Linux)

Thank you for explaining... if I understand you correctly, VLC would have to add the ability to play SWF files to be able replace flash players embedded in webpages. Ok. However... VLC is able to play YouTube videos as a stand-alone player if I pass the URL of the webpage to it. Presumably it parses...

Replacement for Adobe Flash plugin (Linux)

I've had it with Adobe Flash on Linux. While I give kudos to Adobe for releasing a 64-bit version of Flash on Linux before a 64-bit version on Windows or Mac, I have to say the implementation sucks. It's incredibly greedy for CPU and memory resources, and maintains a large footprint in the system ev...

Sizes of data block input into VLC? (HD testing)

I'm trying different hard disk filesystems (NTFS, ext2/3, etc.) on an external HD that's used mainly to store video files for playback on a PC (using VLC) and on a flat-screen TV (using WDTV). Though HD speed probably isn't the limiting factor in either scenario, I'd like to have as high a sequentia...
