Since my original post, I've managed to track down the source of the problem. Somehow, a setting within my firewall had changed; by fixing that, the VLC Player now closes without any difficulty.

As a newbie here, I'm happy to find a collection of forums where one might discuss a problem or two. In this instance, I'm happy to report that there is but one. For the record, I'm running Win XP. Until recently, I was using VLC Player 1.0 without any difficulties. Without any reason to explain why...
