Having a few file format problems with VLC.

I have switched to Ubuntu Linux, and having used VLS for years in Window$, I am encountering some problems. I dislike most other Linux players as not fully CODED enables or just not featured enough, so I am hoping for success (again) with VLC. I am 95% sure I used VLC to play my SWF files, like this...

Now how about a frame grabber that grabs, say every first, second, 4th or 8th frame, and stores and writes it to a image file? Sort of a poor man's frame-by-framer...

Frame advance or other slomo feature available?

Is ther a "frame-by-frame" advance feature available? Moving the slider bar does not seem to advance the image and have found no frame advance controls.

(Win 98SE, 350Mhz 128MEG antqwue but functional PC)
