Well, the problem is the AVI demuxer of VLC that doesn't support it. Using the avformat demuxer in VLC 1.1 works.

Just do something about the multicore support, at least for H.264 vids only. You can always provide help to the ffmpeg team, so the codecs become threaded. I use yadif, and it is fine. Frame doubling is usually not necessary, but feel free to use it
