Broken plugins cache perhaps. If you remove the entire VLC dir in the Preferences, then this gets deleted. Might explain this issue.

ok, i have a candidate for what is causing it: I turned off ical, which I hadn't ever used concurrently w/vlc before, and then brought vlc up as a standalone. I didn't run any video, but it stayed up okay. then I reloaded ical, and when I went back to vlc, it had frozen open.

I don't understand... it seemed to work fine in 0.8.1 and the base 256MB ram in my Mini. Now, after I have upgraded to 1GB, it crashes in both 0.8.1 and 0.8.2. this is regardless of whether I use an "open with" on a file or standalone mode
