It is a problem with capture card colorspace and colorspace that deinterlacing uses. VLC Deinterlacing does not work with YUY2 colorspace. I've been waiting for this feature to be added to VLC for over 2-3 years now :( Maybe someone could ask JohnAD from AVforums or Dscaler forums to give some help?...

VLC gets the info from device driver. If the driver says the device can only do 320x240, then there is nothing much to do. What about the color space issue? It seems that the driver is once again only telling that it only supports UYVY, which also doesn't seem to support deinterlacing. So I'm stuck...

Hmm I have that same saa7134 chipset. I suggest you change regional settings (pal/ntsc) for the black and white thing, or use advanced options when you're selecting capture card and set the video pid to 1-4, just experiment... Btw, what resolution do you get? I don't know why but vlc won't let me se...
