By chance are the files you are trying to play any of the follwoing?

o iTuens audio books?
o purchased with iTunes 4.5 or newer?
o purchased on another computer from the one they are being played on?

By Chance do the files that will not play come under any of the following situations :

o They are audio books
o They were purachased with iTunes 4.5
o They were purchsed and played on a diiffernt PC that you are playing them on with VLC

This is a long shot but you want to make sure that DMA is enabled for the DVD drive. I stopped using Windows after Win2k so I am not sure were you set this now. While in the vlc dirctory type :

rpm -U *.rpm

If it comes back and says "failed dependences" the installer needs extra files that it can not find.

Do you have other DVD playing software that works with this set up? Usually this problem is caused by DMA not being enabled. I do not see how this set up could utilize DMA though.

Also which kernal are you running? Do you have NVIDIA drivers by chance?

The only down side to this is that you can NOT change skins because of the way the RPM's are configured

Not a problem. That just means that the RPM did NOT have a digital signature. Since you presumably downloaded it from videolan.org the source of the file is reasonably reliable.
