i got the same problem with a mkv file which is a remux of a Bluray. No video but sound is working. I am using VLC 0.9.8a. The strange thing is, i tested it with the last stable release of VLC for vista and the playback of the same file was fine.
EDIT: doesn't work in VLC 1.0.0 either
