After some time I re-tried the solutions proposed but the problem persists. Maybe after the last advice the hiccups are less frequent but they still are there. (Also downloaded the latest build). Other suggestions?

I upgraded to the last version of VLC and suddenly there is sonic hiccup every 5 seconds or so, no matter what file I play back. Hello. I know about the hotkeys h and j for subtitle delay, but in one case the delay was about 3 minutes, and since each key click advances for 50 m/sec it's an awful lot time of keeping down the hotkeys...
Is there a way to directly input the delay, at preferences?

Well it's solved. Maybe it has something to do with the srt file, although the same file played OK with Quick Time. Thanks anyway.

I have deleted the installation plus every file and folder containing "vlc" in it. I have restarted and installed a fresh copy of vlc (always last edition). Subtitles keep not displaying. Please help!

I have already reset preferences ("reset all"). As for the cache, I'm not sure how to reset it. I just deleted the relevant files from Library/Preferences/VLC. No improvement though.
