No sound capturing vcb stream

I have an happauge impactvcb and I am using the S-video input and a audigy se for sound capture. If I display the input live I get sound, but if I try to record the stream to a file (MPEG-2 protocol) I get a picture, but no sound on playback. I have solved my problem. On the command line 'vlc --v4l2-input 2' works to set the s-video input on the video capture board input, but using the gui control panel under 'media->open caputure device->advanced options' to set input does not (in fact I am not sure anything in that control panel works ...

Additional information. I tried using the composite inputs of the video card and one of them worked. The problem is definitely setting the correct input of the video capture board.

I also tested composite input. Both s-video and composite work with tvtime, xawtv, and cheese but not with vlc. Note that the version of vlc I used was obtained with 'sudo apt-get install vlc'.
