ok, vlc 100_0235.mov --sout "#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,acodec=mpga,vb=800,ab=128,deinterlace, brightness=1.5 }:standard{access=file,mux=ts,dst="new_video.mp4"}" is doing something, it runs to completion, but just gives me a copy of the original file, i.e. not adjusting the brightnes...

ah... but this worked up until the version before this one, and I have always used this to compile vlc? and './configure --help' does give ... Some influential environment variables: ... LDFLAGS linker flags, e.g. -L<lib dir> if you have libraries in a nonstandard directory <lib dir> CPPFLAGS C/C++/...

ok, solved this: by reinstalling ffmpeg (latest version)

ffmpeg:
./configure --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-shared --enable-libxvid --enable-gpl --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libmp3lame

vlc:
./configure --enable-faad --enable-dmo --enable-loader --enable-vorbis
