Fixing permissions didn't help. And when starting vlc from command line no errors or warnings are displayed (or is there a special option to turn on/activate debugging errors and warnings?)

What do you mean by that? I downloaded a fresh copy of the 1.1.3 version from the server, mounted it and launched the application, but that didn't help. So how else can I "reinstall the .dmg"?
