What do you mean with "closing a file"?
VLC's interface resemsbles a CD player. If you want to stop a file from playing, hit the STOP button (has a grey rectangle on it). With PAUSE you pause (two vertical lines).

@ajmm: This error is indeed from the Linux box. And yes I am sure port 8080/tcp is open.
@developer: Yes it is 0.9 and I'll give 0.8.6 a try soon.

What also catches me by suprise is that it once worked seemlesly and now (all out of a sudden) stopped working completely. :(

Hi all! I got the following setup: Win xp sp3 with latest vlc (j-b's fixed flv playback build ;-) and a ubuntu 8.10 (too with latest vlc).
