Doesn't the latest nighly build of VLC (both PPC and Intel builds) support WMV3? Also, you could try installing the latest Flip4Mac plugin and play the video in QuickTime and see what happens... Of course you'd also need to have the AC3 component for QT as well.

I think that's usually called 'tearing', which can happen when the renderer can't keep up with screen refresh.

Most of the subtitles I encountered had EUC-KR encoding specified in the SMI file, and sure enough, most of my anime collection have no trouble getting their subtitles loaded with this setting.

VLC is going to support WMV3 this autumn btw.
So is the ffmpeg team finally cracking the WMV3 nut? Or is VLC going to get the 'passthrough' support via Flip4Mac?

Have you ever contacted the Flip4Mac guys about the problem? If you report about it, they usually come around to fixing it. WMP9 for Mac is fast becoming obsolete. Instead of clinging onto that clunky solution help something that's actively in development.

Uh... yes they do. 1) You can run the current release version of Flip4Mac under Rosetta. 2) There's a semi-public beta of Flip4Mac for Intel Macs out since last week. While the official sign-up and download is closed, do a bit of search and you can locate a rogue download link without too much effor...

Trouble with subtitle-embedded .mkv files

I've got several .mkv files with embedded subtitles, but none of them seem to show the subtitles properly. They come out looking broken and have an error box popping up with messages like main: picture 0x31cd44c refcount is -1 although the hexadecimal number varies. I checked the type of subtitle wi...

I'm not sure if this has been addressed already, but I hear that intel macs should be capable of playing wmv9 video. I have some wmv9 videos contained withing .avi and not being able to play them on my mac has been a longstanding problem. Has this issue been resolved with the intel macs + vlc, or a...

Technically speaking, there's no distinction between 'Windows AVI' and 'Mac AVI' file. It's the same thing. However, because AVI is only a container and does not specify the codec, and certain codecs aren't supported by VLC for Mac (notably, WMV3), some AVIs that play fine in Windows may not play co...

I don't know about the playlist problem (I never use it) but as for subtitles, if you want to specify a subtitle file for the movie you want to see, you should go to File > Open File and after specifying the movie file, check 'load subtitles file' and load the subtitle. If the subtitle file has the ...

There's also a possibility that his system is not in a proper condition (.plist problem or otherwise), which prevents him from playing video files normally. Oh, and while testing both the PPC-0.8.4a+Rosetta and Intel-200060204 build, I noticed through Activity Monitor that the Intel one takes about twice the CPU usage as PPC one... certain DIVX file I played got 15% with Intel build and 30% with PPC build. Works with DIVX files with just "Enable CPU MMX support" unchecked and leaving the Video Output Module to "Default". My ATI X600Pro is accelerated. If MMX is checked the DIVX files don't play properly and sometimes crashes the app. Subtitles aren't getting rendered, though. I hav...

Umm, they aren't sneaky, really. They're being quite 'in-your-face', in fact.
I can't really see MS releasing their non-trivial code under GPL-compatible

Re: wmv3 error on avi file

Read through the posts and there seems to be no sollution for playing avi files requiring wmv3 codec?

Thanks for any help!

Just to summarize on the WMV3 issue... - Flip4Mac WMV plugin has started supporting playback of AVI. However, current tests show it's not working when the video codec is WMV3. The developers know this issue. As I mentioned before, I have sent sample files so they can test and solve this issue. - .WM...

Actually, i have just contacted the Flip4Mac developers and asked them wether they would care to assist us in implementing F4M WMV3 support in VLC. So that you can playback WMV3 with VLC, if you have the F4M components installed. Not only is this a great news, I also gave F4M guys the WMV3-encoded ...
