OK, I have found a way:

You need to mouse click on the video in the controller window. Then, the missing info is displayed. Bug or feature? In any case it's a little awkward.

Hi, up until 0.8.6 vlc displayed the screen display resolution (Command-I; or Window=>Information=>Advanced Information=>Stream0) like for example 640x480 or 1280x720.
