for what its worth:
i followed advice in some other similar thread and increased the file cache from 300 to 1000 (tools>preferences>all settings>input codecs>access modules>file) and at teh first glance the problem seems to be gone (using vlc 0.9.4).
i cant confirm for the one time when the codec was divx 6 in mkv since i deleted teh file before i checked, but otherwise yeah. when the video freezes and i check the messages its always avcodec error. (and as said on standard no 720p or higher resolutions)

that i noticed, it doesnt however stay in the last directory open (when closing and opening vlc) as opposed to the advanced open file and thus the constant directory browsing
hm, i think there is a slight misunderstanding. im wondering if i can enable the open file button that was in teh previous version (pre0.9.0) like pointed in the picture:
