I'm on Ubuntu Hardy, QT 4.4.x (backports repos) and VLC 0.9.4.
I might be able to do some debugging in the terminal, if that's any help.

Then one can hope it'll be fixed soon. I recieved upgrades today from the korn repo and then there was no full screen controller anymore.

On 0.9.4 I miss the full screen controller. Do you guys have it? I have separate windows too. Maybe it's connetced?

Received an upgrade today of vlc and the controller doesn't show up at all in fullscreen. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with all upgrades and 8.10 backports enabled (for Qt 4.4.x), and vlc from http://ppa.launchpad.net/c-korn/ubuntu. It has wokred wonderfully until now! Really like the fullscreen controll...

Solved it!

It was rather simple; started a film from terminal with parameter -vv and saw that the seg fault happend when trying to update.
Edited vlcrc and changed to 199 days interval for updating and set notification to 0 (zero).
