Re: Some DVDs open to title menu, some play audio but show no menu

Try this: Tools -> Preferences -> Show settings: ALL Input codecs -> Access modules -> DVD with menus Untick the option "Start directly in menu". Save the preferences then exit and restart VLC. Aha! That seems to have fixed all the problems (going to the first TITLE menu, or not showing a...

Some DVDs open to title menu, some play audio but show no menu

So I've been playing back my collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs ("The Chosen Collection"). When I open it from the DVD drive of a computer of mine, it works fine. However, using a new DVD drive (an ASUS Blu-Ray drive) in another computer, every disc (so far) opens either on the fi...

I think you should start your own thread, @pebb152 - your issue has nothing to do with mine.

Re: Video saved from DVD never playable - why?

Have you tried VLC 3.0 ?

I have not. I didn't even know it had been released. I shall give it a try!

Meanwhile, I found that Handbrake works reasonably good for the initial extraction, then I can use VLC for editing the clip, and THAT works.

But I'll try the new release - thanks!

Video saved from DVD never playable - why?

Hi all... For years I've tried to save bits of video from DVDs using VLC; it has never worked. At first I thought it was a bug that would be fixed, but it still doesn't work, even to this day. When I click the "record" button while playing a DVD, it records to a file. However, if I try to ...

Re: VLC video halts for a few milliseconds every second or s

I've included here two logs - one from the "Add interface" menu at debug level, and one file log at debug level. (I looked for a way to attach the files, but I couldn't find a way to do that in this forum; I tried including both logs in the body of this posting, but was told the posting wa...

VLC video halts for a few milliseconds every second or so...

I don't know if you'd call this "choppy" or "hesitation" or what - I'm running VLC 2.1.0 on an i3 system, plenty of processor power, memory, and a good HTPC-focused ATI card running the latest x64 Catalyst drivers under WIndows 7 x64. When watching a DVD ripped to disk (raw forma...

Re: Ripped DVD playback - video stops/starts constantly

Thanks for the suggestion - sadly, when I see the stop/start happening, I don't see any messages displayed. Some debug messages about changing to fullscreen, hiding the mouse, etc, but no errors or warnings. I wonder if it could be some other component (hardware decoding gone wrong, for example). - ...

Ripped DVD playback - video stops/starts constantly

Hi all... So lately I've been playing back some ripped DVDs, and have noticed that the video will run for about a second, then stop for a VERY short time (1/8 second or less) and then start again, and keep doing this through the whole viewing. The audio is unaffected, but this stop/start thing is an...

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

I am using SPDIF output from my Dell Inspiron E1505. I had these same issue of intermittent hiccups when using spdif out. But recently i found something, along with spdif output, take the output from the system through stereo jack also and give it to the A/V receiver. But in the receiver set the in...

Re: Streaming ripped DVD over wifi from WIndows share - stutter?

Thanks for the suggestion - well, I upped all cacheing values that seemed at all related by x10 (eg. from 3000ms to 30000ms). So what happens? After 2x the buffer time (1 minute = (2 x 30000ms)), playback stops completely again. What do you suppose might be happening? No matter the buffer size, when...

Re: Streaming ripped DVD over wifi from WIndows share - stutter?

Increase caching 10times
I shall ask again - WHICH cacheing values? There are probably 30 or 40 "cacheing" values distributed through the settings.

Re: Streaming ripped DVD over wifi from WIndows share - stutter?

Hello all... I'm still having this problem. Running VLC 1.0.1 on Ubuntu 9.04, trying to play a ripped DVD on a Windows share, over WiFi. It still hangs after several seconds of play. I've upped a few of the cacheing values to no avail. Has anybody successfully been able to play ripped DVDs, exported...

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

Because with DirectShow playback chain one cannot really use any build in VLC codecs or other stuff. And there are good and open source DirectShow players (like Media Player Classic Home Cinema) already available. Oh well - thanks for all the info, anyway! I hope some day I can get S/PDIF working r...

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

Why is that? I did a little searching, but couldn't find anywhere where someone said the reasoning behind that (tho' I HAVE read that the DirectShow API is too complex).

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

VLC doesn't use DirectShow for playback like PowerDVD does. So issues is mostly limited to VLC and other players that are based to VLC basecode.
Hmmm.... *strokes chin* ... any plan for implementing use of DirectShow in VLC?

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

The audio processing has some timing issues under Win32 which cause problems with certain setups. So some cards work correctly, some cards must be use with waveout and some cards don't work correctly at all (audio dropouts and another issues). So if that's the case, why don't I see these issues wit...

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

Darn, just tried a few more things, read every posting I could on the subject, and there just seems no solution, due to the SPDIF problems you pointed to. Is there any reason this is broken? Tons of folks use SPDIF, and this HT Omega Striker card I'm using is close to top-of-the-line, so I was hopin...

Ok, so I tried "use SPDIF when available", and things got way worse. Playback of the sound from the DVD sounded like the stream being played twice, but 1/4 second out of sync with itself. Sounded pretty horrible. Do you have suggestions given the symptoms I've mentioned? UPDATE: I tried th...

Re: Sound "hiccups" watching ripped DVD...

You use SPDIF output? Yes, using the optical out on my box. Is this the key? (i.e. if I search for this problem with 'spdif' in my search, I'll find the answer?). UPDATE: I see others have pointed to "Use SPDIF if available" or something along those lines. I'll try that and report back. I...

Hey all... I was just watching a DVD I'd ripped to hard drive, and noticed that the sound would occasionally drop out for a fraction of a second during playback. The video didn't have any of these "hiccups", but the sound would just either go off, or get significantly reduced, for a very s...

Re: Streaming ripped DVD over wifi from WIndows share - stutter?

Which cacheing value are you referring to? There are a bunch (I am using detailed settings). Perhaps you can give me a path in the settings tree to go to? Incidentally, if I set ALL of the cache values in Input/Codecs->Access Modules to 1000ms, and then try to play a ripped DVD over the network, VLC...
