Oh come on. This is such an essential and universal feature in media players that if the devs don't see the need for it, it's the reason VLC isn't mainstream. Just because it's great doesn't mean it can't go mainstream.

Yes, it was set to default, so I tried DirectX, OpenGL, etc. Saved and restarted player each time, then played a video.

I have the same problem. I've been using 0.8.6h on an XP Home PC for a couple of years now, and just upgraded to 0.9.2 today. Right away video playback failed, with no error messages, nothing, even though the audio is fine. I tried every available overlay, or none, but nothing helped.
