I've read on Musepack homepage, that VLC supports Musepack SV8 since v1.1.6.
So, I've downloaded the latest available official build (1.1.7) and guess - it worked!

Is there any way to check whether this patch is included in certain nightly build?
I've tried (Windows) builds from Dec 12, but the playback was not working yet.

On the link below you can find 7 test files encoded in sv8 and different combination of bitrate, RG, tags, covers, chapters as well as 3 files encoded in sv7.

I can make 5 (or more) different variants of one and the same small source file, compressed (and tagged) with different settings, I think this would be better than providing you 5 different files.

Even v1.2.0 does not play sv8 files more than 1-2 seconds. Waiting for v1.3 or maybe 2.0

There is a small improvement in latest vlc-1.1.0-git-20100107-0002 for windows. It already plays about a second from the beginning of a musepack SV8 file. In the Codec Details window one can see "Codec: MUSEPACK8 Audio (MPCK)". So, somebody is working on that, thanks guys. Now the problem ...

Well, Musepack support is broken in Windows compiles too, but it seems that development does not have enough time to fix it.

Most MPC is not SV8... Anyway, we are working on it.

Obviously not for v1.0, should we expect SV8 support in some 1.x version after all?

Very good post, cheers. Just one small addition, AFAIK MPC can be played by portables using Rockbox firmware. Only SV7 format so far, SV8 support is under development. It is open-source as well. As for Ogg, it will perhaps become more popular since it's been allowed by HTML5 specification. Currently...

The reason I need so much Musepack SV8 support in VLC is that I've planned to use VLC for streaming in my local (home) network. And since a big part of my music is in MPC...

New library - I guess yes, about API - I don't have a clue. I'm not a developer, unfortunately.

Latest build (0.9.7) is capable of playing APE already.
Not MPC SV8 yet. Strange, because it seems that VLC use one and the same library as Mplayer.
Anyhow.

All APE files I've tried are crashing VLC.

Confirmed with latest nightly build (vlc-0.9.3-git-20080921-0254-win32) and ape files encoded with three versions of MAC, 3.97, 3.99 and 4.01.
