I was trying to run vlc from a cron job also, and I think there's a problem with the DISPLAY variable not being set.

I'm researching this now, will post a solution here if I find it. (I'm not sure about recording to a file though)

After having made a mess of things completely on this computer, I started over fresh with the 8.04.1 ubuntu desktop install, keeping only my "/mymedia" partition. My problem here is with VLC, which was the one thing that worked just fine under my previous (otherwise really hosed) installat...

Is that 10 seconds to be considered 10 real seconds, so 5 film seconds? Or is it 10 film seconds, so 20 real seconds? I would expect that it would skip 10sec with reference to the file's time index, regardless of playback rate. Any other behavior than that would find me annoyed. Speaking of annoyed...
