I have the same exact problem. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit with the latest ATI Propitiatory drivers with an ATI Mobillity Radeon X600, and have full 3D acceleration support as tested by glxinfo, Compiz, and all my OpenGl Games and such.
