After all that, I have QT 7.4.5 running, but VLC-0.8.6i still crashes after about ten seconds. Any suggestions?

Me too. I upgraded to vlc-0.8.i after problems with 0.8.h: prior to that I went back, successfully, to 0.8.f — however, after installing 0.8.i VLC (all versions I have tried, i.e. f, h & i) will start, the audio coughs twice, then VLC crashes after about 3 or 4 seconds, black screen all the time...
