Re: How to use VLC to extract a certain part of a DVD?

Hi, I would use HandBrake (www.handbrake.fr) to encode the Video_TS folder to an MP4 file. You could then load this up in a movie editing program and extract what video you need. You can extract video from a DVD in VLC but in my experience it is not very precise - chances are you would need to edit ...

We need an announcement thread about multiregion DVDs...

Hi, It would be great if a sticky announcement thread could be put on the Mac OS X board about about multiregion DVD playback. A lot of people seem to be posting asking why they can't play DVDs from regions other than what their drive is set to, as they don't know about the hardware region lockout o...

Re: OSX dock hiding

The dock should hide automatically. Just make sure you have VLC open (i.e. you can see the toolbar at the top of the screen before you go into fullscreen) and not FInder.

Re: Problem with screen resolution on laptop

Have you tried configuring your video card? Most video cards with TV out have a way to configure their settings, including screen cropping and resizing etc (in XP you would do this by opening Control Panel -> Display -> Advanced, I'm not sure if it's the same with Vista)

Re: Slow Motion feature and convert MP4 to DVD format

If you want to convert video to DVD there is probably a simpler way to do it than with VLC. What operating system are you running?

Re: HELP!!

Have you tried deleting/resetting your preferences? Is it possible you've somehow altered the colour balance in video effects (if, for example, you put saturation as low as possible that would explain why you could only see a grey screen)

Re: removing display of filename upon video start

Hi,

You should just be able to go into advanced video properties and uncheck the "Show media title on video" box.

On the Mac version you click Preferences -> All -> Video -> Show media title on video.

Re: VLC player will not play dvds

Hi, It sounds like you're trying to play a movie from a region different to that which your DVD drive is set to. Modern Macs have region encoding at the hardware level; using VLC will not necessarily let you play out of region DVDs. There are a few options that might work- - Try opening the disc as ...

Have you tried downloading the Intel Mac specific package as opposed to the universal binary version?

Re: Unable to navigate DVD menus

Really? That is strange then, because I certainly didn't get 5 chances to change my region. Or maybe I've not looked in the right place? DVD Player just says that I'm locked to a region and can't change that. Hmm.. that's odd. I think the normal procedure is that when you try to play a DVD from a d...

Re: Unable to navigate DVD menus

My G5 is from like 2004, so I don't think there's the '5 changes then out' that some iMacs get. Sorry, I'm pretty sure the '5 changes and out' system (aka RPC2) has been in place for quite some time. I think it's only early DVD drives from around 2000-2001 that don't have this system. Messing with ...

Re: Unable to navigate DVD menus

You're trying to open a DVD from a region different to the one your drive is set to, right? Keep in mind that VLC by itself is not always sufficient for multiregion DVD playback. If I remember correctly the optical drives installed in some recent Macs have region encoding on the hardware level, and ...

Re: Problem !! Saved video from capture device will not play..

From your reply it sounds like the video plays fine in VLC... why not just transcode it to another, more widely supported format and put that on the DVD?

Re: Best format for DVD playback?

Wikipedia (which, of course, is never wrong) tells me that most DVDs use: 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio MPEG-2 video, stored at a resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL) at 29.97 or 25 FPS Keep in mind though that there's often a bit more involved in making a stand-alone DVD than just bu...

Re: don't know how to turn avi files into mp4 files PLEASE HELP

i figured out how to turn it into an mp4 but now how do i put it on my ipod Hi, The iPod has quite specific requirements for video, so I wouldn't try to encode the video in VLC. I would recommend you download ffmpegX (a shareware video converter), which has a preset setting to convert to iPod video...

Solved! I found that by opening the VIDEO_TS folder, as opposed to the DVD itself, the DVDs played back fine.

Scrambled playback on certain DVDs?....

Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone is able to help with a problem I have playing certain DVDs in Mac OS X VLC. I can play the majority of the DVDs I own, however on a few the video is badly scrambled and pixelated. Things I've noticed... - I've played the DVDs successfully in VLC on my Windows XP/ Xubu...
