The multichannels audio support in VLC was developed especially for the M-Audio Sonica. The mini has a new RPC2 drive, so as a rule will not play any region-locked DVD unless the region is properly set. Since you can play with DVD Player, the region must have been set.

Anyway, it is usually no problem to pick and choose chapters through the VLC menu.

What device do you have to connect to the optical cable? I know the Sonica Transit, for one. I think supplying the optical output is up to interface. I read that Apple's DVD Player will let the digital audio pass through.
