No problem.

If you use the latest drivers, the latest VLC, use no more then the 5.1 setup of the Sonica and properly configure/assign your speakers in Audio Midi Setup Utility, you shouldn't have a single issue. Alas, I did try just that. Could it be that I had to do a clean install first, or it would work on ...

M-Audio

Sonica Theater. Basically you're fine as long as you choose digital out. I struggled for six months to get the six-channel output the Sonica Theater was designed for, then I gave up [1]. I should have bought the Sonica Transit (digital in/out only) to start with. These days all playback systems exce...

Which disc format ?

It may be you are burning the DVD in the wrong format. In that case you may still be able to play the movie in VLC as a VIDEO_TS folder, provided you have such a folder on your disc. Go to VLC->File->Open Disc, and navigate to the VIDEO_TS option. See if you can still play the media. Let us know. We...

Thanks!

The multichannels audio support in VLC was developed especially for the M-Audio Sonica. There are some small issues in the channel ordering of the speakers with the default M-Audio settings, and you need to set this yourself in the Audio Midi Setup utility. But it works. I tested it on all both 10....

Hi osfd! If I understand you OK, you didn't set any region on your mini yet. The little bugger is then so-to-speak "vergin". Now, there are a few things to keep in mind 1) the mini has a new drive of type RPC2, which means VLC can not defeat the region code, as it used to be the case with ...

mini

The mini has a new RPC2 drive, so as a rule will not play any region-locked DVD unless the region is properly set. Since you can play with DVD Player, the region must have been set.

Anyway, it is usually no problem to pick and choose chapters through the VLC menu.

Thanks!

I appreciate your posting your experiences (I also appreciate myself for providing some feedback, which is unusual for this forum). The behaviour with RPC1 drives is normal: VLC will play any title, even if the region is not set at all. Different story with RPC2 drives: only a few region-locked titl...

Preferences->Coreaudio

Try Preferences->Audio with "Advanced" selected, then choose Coreaudio. When you play a movie you should have a full selection of output channels in the Audio menu, including Digital. Let me know if it works, because I am giving up on analog audio. I regret buying the Logitech Z5300 (analo...

Re: Any other VLC / airport express / airfoil users?

Third problem: it seems VLC only sees the stereo ccapabilities of my Mac, so outputs only stereo even though my AV receiver can do 5.1. I don't have a solution for this. [...] Should I just get an M-Audio Transit and connect the audio over the USB-optical adapter? I also can get Stereo only with Ti...

RPC2 DVD Drive works with VLC !

I was surprised to see that my Mac mini, with the infamous matSHITa drive MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8124: Model: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8124 Revision: DACD Serial Number: Detachable Drive: No Protocol: ATAPI Unit Number: 1 Socket Type: Internal allows me to play at least one DVD with Region 2 only. Panther -> 5.1; Tiger -> Stereo only !

Sonica Theater / Driver 1.6 (july 2005) VLC 0.8.2 on OS 10.3.9: plays 5.1 surround OK, but sometimes stereo comes from wrong channels (can be fixed by setting output to Stereo in Sonica, then back to 5.1) on OS 10.4.2: plays only and always stereo, even with 5.1 soundtrack. Behaves like DVD Player. ...

No it's stereo that doesn't work

Looks like VLC plays Dolby Surround soundtracks OK now, but the plain stereo soundtracks comes out of the left front and subwoofer channels. This is confusing when a movie has two types of soundtracks, e.g. for the DVD menu/trailers and the feature film. I guess it's a matter of adjusting the Audio ...

Gained 5.1 Surround, then lost it again!

Mac OS 10.3.9 - Sonica Theater 1.6 driver - VLC 0.8.2 I had the known problem of scrambled audio channels with VLC and 6-channel surround. I followed the instructions in the README file, concerning the Audio MIDI Setup application. That didn't work. However, after resetting the VLC preferences to de...

Optical Out

What device do you have to connect to the optical cable? I know the Sonica Transit, for one. I think supplying the optical output is up to interface. I read that Apple's DVD Player will let the digital audio pass through.

Actually it't not a Mac only issue.
This is good to hear. In the FAQ the issue was described as affecting the Mac only.

"Region-free" Mac OS X Developer?

Hi! I have good C++ experience and some Xcode exposure. I would be very interested in contributing to the development of VLC on OS X. However, I am disturbed by the latest news that VLC is no longer able to play DVDs region-free on new Macs. * Is it a Mac-only issue? Related to Apple's ever growing ...
