I second "Bowa." I have Realtek AC888, and no matter if I use DirectX or Waveout, there is a big stuttering problem with SPDIF. Since I like to use my external Dolby and DTS decoder, this lack of good SPDIF is the only reason I'm still using Media Player Classic.

I changed from Default to Waveout32. The BSOD stopped.

I tested directsound with dxdiag and found no problems.

Could it be that VLC has some bad codecs associated with directx?
