For all my movies that have 5.1 surround audio streams I have to go and manually change the audio device to 5.1 every time. VLC sets it to stereo by default. There's an option in the audio preferences called force detection of dolby surround but that doesn't do anything.

I restarted my windows XP box and it does the same thing with that OS also. It only does it with H264 movies that I have encoded at 720p or higher. Its not a big deal because after the PC is running for a few hours you can seek through the whole movie no problem but its a bug you should be aware of.
