Ironically, the solution to this whole transcoding problem, is to use VisualHub as the frontend and force it (in Advanced settings) to decode using (wait for it....) VLC Then it transcodes fine. You may need to trash all VLC preferences before re-installing. With 086c on my intel Mac Pro VLC doesn't crash when transcoding other than if I select an inappropriate audio preference in the dialogue screen. Anyway VLC is kinda lame when it comes to transcoding. I only use it if nothing else work...

I have some mpg files pulled off my Tivo HD. VLC will play them fine, however I am trying to transode them so I can get them into iTunes and thus my iPhone.
