let me answer my own question. I used AVS VideoConverter to put this into mkv format and it works. The stutter is gone

I also have a .ts-related problem : I have a HD video from television (with 8.7 GB) where the video halts every 10 seconds or so; but the audio continues. Is this a problem with VLC or could it be that my system (Intel Celeron E3400 @ 2.60 GHz, 2GB memory, Windows 7 Ultimate) is not powerful enough....

Unfortunately, the W2K exception happens so fast that the DrWatson debugger does not pick up the error (I even get a msg to this effect).

However, I will now give it another try with 0.9.5 and see what happens. Will report back

Yes indeed; any standard DVD. One more thing: in most cases, after playing a DVD with 0.9.4, then closing the player, I get a Windows exception error which never happens under 0.8.6

Agree 100%. It is true that there are many more options - some sensible, some not - but 0.8.6 has much better performance

I have just installed v0.9.4; upgraded from 0.8.6. The latter worked perfectly, and still does (I reinstalled it now). However, when playing DVDs on 0.9.4, video and audio streams get severely out of sync. I wonder if I have to fiddle with the configuration, or if the hardware is not powerful enough...

I have the exact same problem; except on a PC. Version 0.8.6 works fine; but with 0.94 video and audio are out off sync most of the time
