Re: Simple way to play a DVD over my LAN?

I retract my previous post -- it seems AnyDVD did do the trick, thanks again for the tip. I then went to pay for my copy, but it also turned out that AnyDVD is rather expensive from the US (it's priced at $49 Euros, which comes out to about $75 US). I then discovered DVD43 which also seems to do the...

Re: Simple way to play a DVD over my LAN?

I haven't had luck with this yet -- if you (or anybody else here) has a chance to give it a try, I'd love to hear what happens. All you need is 2 PCs on a local network, and then: 1) on PC-1 (with an optical drive and AnyDVD installed), insert a regular protected DVD 2) set the DVD drive as a networ...

Re: Simple way to play a DVD over my LAN?

I downloaded AnyDVD onto the PC with the DVD drive, but that didn't seem to help. I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to do in AnyDVD -- is the idea that I just install it, and it automatically makes a protected DVD behave as an unprotected DVD? Should I do anything more? If you have a sec to try, ...

Network stream: can client pause/shuttle?

If I set up VLC on a "server" to stream a DVD over a local network, can the "client" that plays it pause & shuttle around within the DVD?

Re: want to set up Video on Demand

set VLC player to stream to your current location then set VLC to recieve that file I'm also trying to play a DVD (in 'PC1') over my LAN to another PC that doesn't have a DVD drive ('PC2'). Can you perhaps give more tips on how I would put a DVD into PC1 and then set VLC on PC1 to stream that -- an...

Simple way to play a DVD over my LAN?

Hi all, I have a "slim" laptop that doesn't have a DVD drive, but I'd like to be able to play DVDs (without use of a USB drive). I had been hoping that I could simply put the DVD into the DVD drive on another PC on the LAN, and then share that drive, and play it from there -- but I now gat...

Re: Play a DVD over LAN via shared drive?

Do you know if there's a way to ask somebody on the VLC team about whether this is possible? It's great to know that there's a fallback method -- though I'm trying to set up less-techie family memebers to play DVDs, and picking VOBs and hunting for special features is too much for them. Ideally, we ...

Re: Play a DVD over LAN via shared drive?

Hey Artie, thanks -- I should have been clear that I've been able to share the DVD drive with the disc in it, and see that share from another PC over the LAN. I've also mounted it with a drive letter. But when I actually try to play the disc, nothing happens. If you're able to share the DVD from PC1...

Re: Play a DVD over LAN via shared drive?

Thanks & interesting -- though I gather that wouldn't work with "special features" etc.?

(seems like I *should* be able to share the drive over the LAN and use it as if it were locally attached)

thanks again, -Scott

Play a DVD over LAN via shared drive?

Hello all,

Wondering if this is possible:

1) put a DVD into the DVD drive on 'PC 1'
2) share that drive
3) mount it from 'PC 2' over the LAN, and play the DVD on 'PC 2'?

(so far I can't seem to get that to work)

Any tips appreciated! -Scott

Re: Baffled by VLC's volume control!

Thanks -- is there anything else I need to turn on/off in VLC's settings to make sure to get "bit pure" sound?

Re: Baffled by VLC's volume control!

ok, so to get pure/unaltered sound, I need to set the volume in preferences to 256, which displays as 50 in the GUI, but behaves like 100% -- is that all right?

If so, do any other settings in VLC affect the audio bits? (ie, is there anything else I need to turn on or off?)

Thanks, -Scott

Baffled by VLC's volume control!

Hi all, first thanks for VLC! I'm embarassed to admit that I'm writing because I'm somewhat baffled by VLC's volume control! My setup takes USB audio out from my PC, and generally I keep all app (and OS) volumes at 100% so that "unaltered audio bits" leave the PC and enter the amp. (ie, I ...
