This is indeed not very clear. The solution is to change the playrate in the other way.

For example, if you clicked twice "fastforward", you will have to click "slow" twice to get back to normal motion.

This shows how to display some text on the video. You can customize this to add effects and other stuff.

You must install the "w32codecs" package from
http://debian.video.free.fr/

However, the Debian package for VLC does not have support for loading external codecs. You can use the nightly builds from http://nightlies.videolan.org that have this support enabled.

By tweaking misc caching parameters in VLC, you can reach a 400-500ms delay, but VLC is not really designed for very low latency streaming, and you won't really be able to have less than that.

Could you check if you have a "Subtitles track" entry in the Video menu ?

If you do, please look if the "Track 1" is selected, or if none is.

The gnomevfs detection should be improved here. In the meantime, add --disable-gnomevfs to the configure line
