I don't know how far you got with this but I found your research very useful. I had been running vlc from a panel icon or the command line using the channels.conf file as a playlist. That works fine. My .tzap directory contains channels.conf for SD and xchannels.conf for HD so I have to run separate...

Help forthcoming from the Mandriva newbie list. It appeared that I did not have the skin engine installed. A quick urpmi vlc-more-skins did the trick. It installed the svlc package and now all is well.

Replying to my own post - naughty naughty. While poking around in the Mandriva package list I discovered svlc (I had installed vlc only) and vlc-more-skins. After installing both packages I found the skinnable interfaces section so all is well. FYI the Mandriva install places the skins under /usr/sh...
