Setting Video Size for Transcoding of Problematic DVD Source

Hi all, after hours of trying different --sout-transcode-* options and reading the forums I'm hoping to get some assistance here. My aim is to force the VLC 0.8.6d transcoding process to provide a specific video size as a result, possibly padding it at top and bottom to achieve a 4:3 aspect ratio wh...

Normalise Audio Level During Transcoding

Hi all, I want to adjust the audio level during the transcoding process and it just doesn't seem to work (0.8.6d/Win). Searching the forums for this topic yields irritating results, like "may work with VLC 0.9 nightly" dated 2005 (!) and a hint from a few weeks ago which won't work for me....

Re: Opening DVD Chapters

AVIdemux and handbrake are quite easy tools for DVD -> MP4 (mov generation is quite problematic with free tools). VLC does an excellent job here I'd say. The H.264 quality at moderate bitrates is excellent and I'm unaware of any compatibility issues so far. For documentation it might be easier to u...

Re: Opening DVD Chapters

There are better tools if you want to convert that chapter to another format (like Xvid AVI). AVIdemux should be a little easier. Oh! I didn't find better tools during my evaluation phase. Can you recommend something for generating H.264/mp4a/.mov, scaling and deinterlacing at the same time? And in...

Tell How Many Titles and Chapters a DVD Has

Hi there, since I didn't find something in the documentation I'm wondering whether there's any (explicit or implicit) way to make VLC tell me how many titles a DVD has, and how many chapters there are in a given title. When I'm using the GUI to access a DVD it seems that VLC falls back to title 1 ch...

Opening DVD Chapters

Hi there, I'm posting this on the Windows specific board because when I searched for any answers it appeared to me that there may be subtle differences between Windows and UN*X wrt command line processing. I'm trying to transcode single chapters of a DVD. Using the GUI, VLC tells me I should use som...

Re: Which is the best format for the best quality ?

-When I want to convert/save a video, which is the best coding ? Depends on how you define "best". Regarding "quality per bitrate" I'd say H.264 but it's not straightforward to play it on any platform. If you have it in a MOV container together with mp4a then Quicktime will play...

Re: DVD titles having different aspect ratios all show as 16:9

You can add Video padding in VLC. To do this go to: Settings >> Preferences... >> Stream output >> Sout stream >> Transcode Then tick the "Advanced options" tickbox (bottom-right of window). Enter values for where it says "Video padding (top)" and "Video padding (bottom)&qu...

Re: DVD titles having different aspect ratios all show as 16:9

Problem is that single titles on the same DVD differ, and VLC doesn't notice it. It's not a commercial DVD. It's a camcorder DVD where I recorded some scenes 4:3 and others 16:9. VLC will play them all 16:9. In more detail: VLC 0.8.6d PLAYS them all 16:9 but TRANSCODES them correctly so while I'm h...

Re: DVD titles having different aspect ratios all show as 16:9

The black strips are there because the DVD-Video format is limited to a maximum anamorphic video aspect-ratio of 16:9, and so any higher (e.g. 2.35:1) the video has to be shown letterboxed with black at the top and bottom of the video. So can I transcode a 16:9 video to 4:3 without losing parts of ...

DVD titles having different aspect ratios all show as 16:9

Hi Experts, I have a DVD here where some titles have 16:9 aspect rations and others have 4:3. When I play the DVD in a pretty old DVD player software, all titles will be shown with the correct aspect ratio. In VLC 0.8.6d, every title will be shown 16:9. Q1: I have figured how to correctly transcode ...

Re: No Audio for Transcoded Files

This may make no difference, but seing as it is apparently not DVD-specific, you could try restting your preferences and cache. To do this, go to: C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data And delete the "vlc" folder. Then try your commanline again. Thank you very much Si...

Re: No Audio for Transcoded Files

Yes - you can enter e.g. "448" in the box yourself (or in the commandline at the top), I just suggested those because they are the defaul 6 channel a52/ac3 audio DVD bitrates. Oh! A select box where I can enter an arbitrary value. I hadn't expected that. Thanks for pointing it out! I've t...

Re: No Audio for Transcoded Files

Assuming that the a52/ac3 track is 6 channels, try changing the "Channels" to "6", selecting "a52" as your audio codec I would recommend either "384" or "448" for the bitrate. Thanks for the tip! I tried 1, 4 and 6 channels -- same result as for 2: ...

Re: No Audio for Transcoded Files

What are the codecs used in the video (press "Ctrl + I" and click on "Advanced information"), and what codecs and container format are you transcoding to? According to VLC Advanced Information, the original camcorder video uses mpgv for video and a52 for audio. I just tried to t...

No Audio for Transcoded Files

Hi all, I came across VLS only recently, after some frsutrating tests of other software. My use case is to rip chapters from a DVD. The DVD is written by a camcorder which stores the scenes as chapters. However, I need those scenes as single videos, and I also need them to have a lower bitrate. So I...
