Never mind. Turns out the problem was some kind of glitch in the preferences. They didn't uniformly apply until after VLC was restarted.

Am I missing something in the subtitles settings in 3.0.12? It seems like cycle subtitles and toggle hotkeys both do the same thing no matter what keys or combinations I assign to them. Both seem to cycle subtitles.

You might be better off using Handbrake for that kind of conversion. That's what it's designed for, while VLC is more of a media player with some conversion tools added.

Why does the Mac version lack an elapsed time display in either the video window or the playlist window? It only shows the time remaining to the right of the progress bar. When using the long jump hotkey combination with the display window selected, it jumps forward/backward 5 minutes. But if the controller is selected, it jumps 10 minutes each way instead. Not a real problem, but an inconsistency.
