How is the subtitle selection done? I tried the same method for subtitles with no success - tried track 0 and 1 etc

I am playing anime with english subs on track 1. When I am watching a series, at the start of every new episode, it defaults to no sub. The subs have to be manually selected each time. Is there a way to change this setting in the 'input / codecs' interface settings?
