I don't know what j-b is talking about and I really do not care(to start going through technical manuals) since this(pause-restart lagging) was not a problem before and now is.

I downloaded the latest stable version of vlc and installed it on my(old) computer[windows 2000pro, 1GHz, 500MB] and to the(new) laptop of my friend(vista, 2.xx dual core...). In windows2000pro it plays avis, oggs etc nicely but playing matroskas(.mkv) is disatrous.(any kind of this package format)....

Is vlc independent of external libraries etc in linux or it is self-sufficient player in no need of any more codecs like in the windows version?

For example can't play properly any kind of matroska in linux, and plays avis not as smooth as in windows
