When I play a vs folder in VLC, I click media/open folder and the "browse for folder" window opens. Inevitably, the same obscure folder is highlighted in My Music, requiring navigation to a different partition. How can I change the open folder preference?

You can also start messages ( Ctrl+m ) and after that open the file and look for possible audio errors. I'm not sure how to open the file.
