Same here, wanted to try out 1.1.0-pre3 to see if WMV playback improved (was using 1.05) and found that I could no longer play any files from a UNC path either by double-clicking them in Explorer, dragging to VLC or even from within the player. This has come back in v1.02 - was ok in v1.01 if I revert back. Broken for File open, drag file/folder onto VLC or Playlist - same thing happens.
