Can anyone outline what exactly "Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding" does?

I have just enabled this on my MacOSX version of VLC and I can now play my 1080p x264 video, but feel it may of dropped quality somewhat.

Any pointers?

I am also encountering this issue on x264 720p with DTS, the client simply crashes after a while of usage.

Does DTS create additional decoding overhead if you don't use an external decoder and rely on the Mac to transcode via the SPDIF?

Using a Mac Mini 1.83ghz
