Thanks Dimstar. I have now downloaded the vlc-0.8.6d.tar.gz and tried to install this but have hit morew problems. Initially i have to install libmad, libmpeg2, wxwidgets and ffmpeg. Once these were installed i could use ./configure --enable-dvb, which ran successfully. However the make then failed ...

Unfortunately that wasn't the case, the server was still streaming the AVI which was only half through.

In the end i stopped the client VLC and reset it. Once i restarted it all seems to be running fine so far.

Thanks everyone for your advice and help. I have finally given up trying to get VLC installed on SLES10. Instead i have resorted to OpenSuse 10.2, and VLC installed first time with no probs whatsoever.
