tbh I am surprised - I thought this might have affected many people, but perhaps it is something peculiar to my setup

PS vlc has worked perfectly 'out of the box' in debian stable for me for years, which is a major factor in me settling on it for my home box. This seems to have been far from the case on other linux distributions, notably fedora.
