Samba and VLC and Gutsy

I have the a kind of the same problem as this guy I use samba/cifs on my linux ubuntu-7.10 server. When i open a file from my mounted network drive, VLC (or any other player) opens but does not play the file. It seems like it can't stream the file directly from the server like on my other windows pc...
