how to measure maximum decoding speed in vlc?

i have been doing a comparison of various avc decoders/players available here

in mplayer its possible to measure the maximum decoding speed (without displaying any video) via the -vo null -benchmark option

is there something similar in videolan?

apple's quicktime only supports timed text placed in .3gp! yeah, .3gp is nearly the same as .mp4, but still they dont support timed text in .mp4 why? dunno. they also support 6channel aac only in .mov, but not in .mp4, altough mov and mp4 is also very similar using the same standard in both 3gpp and...

3gpp timed text and mpeg-4 timed text are identical. the mpeg-4 standard document basically only refers to the 3gpp one from what i remember

make sure that you use the uptodate libavcodec cvs source
...this version of VLC requires ffmpeg 0.4.9-pre1 or later. ffmpeg's last stable release 0.4.8 will not work.

0.4.9-pre1 is far to outdated

very important:

make sure that you use the uptodate libavcodec cvs source when compiling, as when using old versions you will get a very weak avc/h.264 decoding support

afaik vlc currently doesnt produce 100% spec compliant .mp4 files (dunno about mpg) when used for muxing raw h.264 streams you can also try the mp4creator tool from the mpeg4ip project on sourceforge for muxing raw h.264 streams into .mp4 atm it seems as if most commercial h.264 developers place h.2...

for me videolan (one of the latest nightly builds) doesnt show an error when i try to play .mp4 files with mpeg-4 part17 subs (as you pointed to), but it simply doesnt display the text (altough the subs are choosable in the vlc menu) afaik fen once worked on implementing mpeg-4 timed text to vlc but...
