* Run Handbrake in 32-bit
* Install VLC 1.0.2 64-bit (sadly no 64-bit starting with 1.0.3...)

What's the status of the Mac OX intel nightlies?

I like to know this as well.
1. The last nightly build are dated January 4th.
2. VLC Trunk don't build successfully with Xcode 3.0.

You have downloaded and try to launch VLC 0.8.6c, right?
Well, VLC no longer support the ancient Mac OS 10.2.8. Download an older VLC version, or upgrade your OS.

Since there have been no nightly Trunk builds for Mac OS X (PowerPC or Intel) since June 27th.

MKV (Matroska) is a container.
It can contain audio and video encoded with lots of different codecs. Some of them might not be supported by VLC.

You might get a more precise answer if you tell us which video codec being used.

Set VLC as default player for .avi / .mpg / etc. files...
Search the forum for instructions, since this has been covered many time.
