Call MPlayer

The only way VLC could ever play Realmedia is by using MPlayer. Maybe an option to use mplayer with formats not supported by vlc. cross-platform soultion.
Yes, I know there is much more to it than that, just an idea.

I have the exact same problem. Whenever there is a loud part in the audio, the audio and video skip. Problem remains after 3 or 4 windows reinstalls. Had this problem since at least v0.8.6. up to 0.8.6c. cpu usage is fine during normal playback as well as skipping. specs: CPU: Intel Celeron M 420 RA...

eg. - You have a folder with part 1.avi, part 2.avi, and part 3.avi in it. Opening one of the files will open the rest.

The same thing happens to me. It's usually because the movie is in 16:9 or 2.35:1 and the monitor is 16:10.
