With recent updates to ALSA, they've enabled a lot more sound card controls. Check the card and make sure unused inputs are turned off, and unused gain controls are turned down. In KDE I use kmix; not sure what you'd use in GNOME.

I see this one one of my two Fedora Core 6 workstations (the one that doesn't work). (see my post) The one that does work properly has the radio button for Track 1 checked.

Two identical workstations - one plays, the other doesn't

I have two identical Fedora Core 6 workstations. Both are current on updates. Both ran VLC version vlc-0.8.6b-1.lvn6 perfectly yesterday Today one works, the other doesn't.
