You could also try with the smb access module directly rather than uing file access on a mounted network drive.

And if you have the opportunity to use an other protocol like NFS or even HTTP it's well worth a try. In all my tests smb has never performed well.

What's the encoding of your ssa file ? AFAIK, the libass library only support utf-8.

Is vlc picking a font that support thai ? look at the log of vlc in verbose mode = 2 and see what font it uses
