Not to resurrect old threads but I now have a very real purpose to want to stream audio visualisations. If I can't do it directly, is there a way of capturing the content of the X window? I am running 0.9.9a on Linux.

That is tragic - that is exactly the feature I was looking for.

the problem is probably not vlc file permissions but apache permissions

you should add your apache user to the video group in /etc/groups

you may need to restart apache or your computer before it works.

you need to add the user apache runs as (maybe www-data or apache) to the group 'video' in your /etc/groups file

this is safer than giving server admin privilages to scripts
