This really needs to happen; this behavior is my only main problem with how VLC handles soft subs. Do not have subs timeout and disappear when VLC is paused.

The nightly build server seems to be down at this moment. Is this just temporary, or is there a another place I could get the latest development version to test this out?

This is a G5-specific bug with VLC. Go to the preferences/Modules/audio output/coreaudio section and switch the value there from 0 (or -1) to 1. Then save, quite VLC, and you'll be good to go. You can work around this by adjusting the text rendering size. If you go to the Preferences/Modules/text renderer/freetype, you can change the Font Size in Pixels. I've found that 25 pixels is a pretty ideal size for 4x3 video. YMMV.
